Potteries Sign at Medalta Historic Site

Acrylic and mixed media on birch cradleboard

12 x 12″

We lived on the twelve hundred-block at the end of Dominion Street on the Flats in the 70’s.

Even though we didn’t have a lot of material goods, I have fond memories of exploring this older area of Medicine Hat. As a group of hoodlums, if you could call 5-year olds hoodlums, we would spend our afternoons playing in the high grasses behind Medalta.

This was an abandoned territory in those days with various hills of discarded clay scraps, broken saucers, cups and plates. The vast meadow between IXL Brick and Tile and the Medalta site was an area of mystery and opportunity. My sisters and neighbourhood friends and I would play hide-and seek for hours and when sweaty and exhausted, we would lay on our backs in the waving grasses and point to images hidden in the clouds overhead.
